Frederick H. Harvey
built an empire by offering excellent food,
efficiency of service, and reasonable prices at
railroad depot restaurants. In 1942 his
"Harvey Girls" had become so well known
that they became the title subject of a novel
and, in 1946, of a movie. |
Ray Arthur Kroc
took a "chain" of hamburger stands
operated by two brothers and turned it into one
of the largest franchise operations in the world.
His formula for success was to insure that every
single McDonald's product was prepared the same
and tasted the same, no matter where in the world
the particular restaurant was located. |
White Castle
patented its famous square hamburger patty with
five holes in 1954, more than 30 years after its
first tiny stand opened in Wichita, Kansas. In
1961 it became the first hamburger chain to reach
the 1 billion sales mark. A rock group even
recorded a song about the unique little White
Castle hamburgers in 1986. |
