The Ambassador Bridge
spans the Detroit River and connects Detroit,
Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It is
currently the largest international border
crossing in North America, carrying more than 25
percent of all merchandise trade between the
United States and Canada. |
The Eads Bridge,
at St. Louis, Missouri, was the
first major bridge over the Mississippi River,
the first rail bridge over the Mississippi, and
the world's first steel-truss bridge. Completed
in 1874, it still carries light rail, automobile
and pedestrian traffic today. |
The
George
Washington Bridge crosses
the Hudson River between Upper Manhattan and Fort
Lee, New Jersey. It is the world's only 14-lane
suspension bridge. |
Golden Gate Bridge
One of the longest suspension
bridges in the world, the Golden Gate Bridge
spans a channel at the entrance of San Francisco
Bay and connects northern California to the
peninsula of San Francisco. |
Mackinac Bridge
This five-mile-long bridge
includes the ninth-longest suspension bridge in
the world. It spans the Straits of Mackinac
between the Upper and Lower peninsulas of
Michigan. |
Tower Bridge,
in London, was completed in 1894,
after eight years of construction. It is a
combined bascule ("draw") and
suspension bridge. |
