The St. Lawrence
Seaway is a system of
channels, canals and locks that allows
ocean-going vessels to sail from the Atlantic
Ocean all the way to Duluth, Minnesota, a total
distance of 2,342 miles. It was completed in
1959. |
The Pony
Express operated from April 1860 to
October 1861. Riders on horseback carried the
mail from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento,
California, -- a distance of 1,966 miles -- in
less than 10 days. |

economical national transportation system, with

The Erie
Canal was the first
important national waterway built in the United
States. It crossed New York from Buffalo on Lake
Erie to Troy and Albany on the Hudson River. When
completed in 1825, the canal joined the entire
Great Lakes system with the Atlantic Ocean and
provided a route over which manufactured goods
could flow into the West, and raw materials could
pour into the East. |
George
Mortimer Pullman patented a railroad
car with a folding upper berth in 1864. By 1869
his company was manufacturing five classes of
high quality railroad cars -- sleeper, hotel,
reclining room, parlor, and dining. |
Ezra
Cornell earned a fortune as the
principal stockholder of the Western Union
Telegraph Company, which he helped found in 1855.
He used part of that fortune to found Cornell
University in 1865. |
