Clara
Barton was known as "The Angel
of the Battlefield" during the American
Civil War. In 1881 she helped establish the
American branch of the Red Cross, and then
lobbied the U.S. Senate until it ratified the
Geneva Convention. It was she who originated the
clause in the Red Cross constitution that
provides for relief in calamaties other than war. |
Jean Henri Dunant
After personally witnessing the horrors of war,
Dunant became devoted to forming relief societies
to provide care for wartime wounded. That
devotion resulted in the Geneva Convention, and
to formation of the Red Cross movement. He was
awarded the very first Nobel Prize for Peace for
his work. |
