American Beaver
(Castor canadensis)
The beaver is the second
largest rodent, exceeded in size only by
the capybara. It is up to 3½ feet long,
including 1 foot of broad scaly tail, and
may weigh between 30 and 75 pounds. |

Patagonian
Cavy (Dolichotis
patagonum)
Looking somewhat like a
cross between a rabbit and kangaroo, the
Patagonian cavy has hind legs that are
slightly larger than the front, a long
face, large eyes, and slightly pointed
ears. |

Utah
Prairie Dog (Cynomys
parvidens)
In 1900 it was estimated
that there were 95,000 Utah prairie dogs.
Habitat destruction and pest control
efforts have, however, seriously reduced
that number, and there are now believed
to be less than 5,000 left in the wild. |

Northern
Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys
sabrinus)
The only real difference
between birds/bats and flying squirrels
is that the former are capable of powered
flight, whereas the latter engage in
controlled flight without wing beats. |
