The Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta)
is the second largest carnivore in Africa after the lion. It is found throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa except for the tropical rainforest of western and central Africa and areas with extreme desert conditions. Although commonly portrayed as a scavenger, up to 95% of its diet actually comes from hunts.

This member of the hyena family differs from the true hyenas in having five instead of four toes on the front feet, relatively larger ears, and a narrower muzzle.
