Greater Rhea (Rhea
americana)
The largest bird in the
Americas, the greater rhea stands about
five feet tall and weighs about 50
pounds. Although the rhea cannot fly, it
has very long wings, which are used like
rudders when running. |

Ostrich (Struthio
camelus)
The largest living bird stands up to 8
feet high and weighs up to 285 pounds. An
ostrich's strong legs allow it to run at
speeds of 40 to 50 mph. Those same legs
can also deliver a kick powerful enough
to seriously injure most any predator. |
