Robert Hooke
was one of the most versatile scientists of his
day. Using a compound microscope of his own
design he provided detailed descriptions of
microscopic structures never before seen, coined
the word "cells," and contributed to
the fields of astronomy, mechanics, physics and
geology. |
The Dividing
Engine allowed craftsmen to
accurately mark scales on navigational and other
mathematical instruments. |
Benjamin
Franklin's Work with Electricity led
to the discovery that lightning is caused by
discharges of static electricity in the
atmosphere, which led to the invention of the
lightning rod. |
A Geiger Counter

A Barometer
is an instrument for
measuring atmospheric pressure. The atmosphere
exerts a pressure because air has weight and is
being pulled to the earth by the force of
gravity. For this reason atmospheric pressure
depends on the height of air above the point at
which it is being measured and is lower on top of
a mountain than it is at sea level. |
