Charles BabbageCharles Babbage spent much of his life trying to apply machinery to the calculation and printing of mathematical tables, but was never successful at building a calculating machine.
John NapierJohn Napier was responsible for inventing logarithms, in1614, as well as for a series of numerating rods for the performance of multiplications and divisions.
William OughtredWilliam Oughtred is believed responsible for many symbols now used in mathematics, as well as for development of the slide rule.
