worked out the ratio of the length of a circle's
circumference to its radius (pi), discovered the
principle of buoyancy, explored the principle of
the lever, and devised numerous machines to help
defend his home town from invading Roman armies. |
Charles Babbage
spent much of his life trying to apply machinery
to the calculation and printing of mathematical
tables, but was never successful at building a
calculating machine. |
John
Napier was responsible for inventing
logarithms, in1614, as well as for a series of
numerating rods for the performance of
multiplications and divisions. |
William Oughtred
is believed responsible for many symbols now used
in mathematics, as well as for development of the
slide rule. |
