An Orrery
is essentially a partial model of the solar
system as seen from the "outside," with
the Sun at the center, that accurately recreates
the rotation of the planets around the Sun, along
with, in many models, the rotation of the various
planetary moons around their respective planets. |
Hans Lippershey
probably did not invent the concept of a
refracting telescope, but he did manage to create
the first known example of such a device, in
1608. |
Palomar Mountain
Observatory is located about 40
miles northeast of San Diego. Completed in 1947,
the observatory's main instrument is the 200-inch
Hale Telescope, which is capable of photographing
objects several billion light-years away. |
