The People's
Party also known as
the Populist Party, grew out of dissatisfaction
with the way Democrats and Republicans alike were
dealing with the financial crisis then affecting
poor, white cotton farmers in the South and
drought-stricken wheat farmers in the Plains. It
was formed in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1892. |
The Free
Soil Party was formed by angry
Democrats in 1848. The platform of
the Free Soil Party opposed the extension of
slavery into new territories or states, but
carefully avoided the question of whether slavery
itself should remain legal. |
The International
Year for Human Rights invited
members of the United Nations to devote the year
1968 to intensified efforts and undertakings in
the field of human rights. |
The
Articles of Confederation went into
effect on March 1, 1781, and remained in effect
until ratification of the U.S. Constitution. It
created a loose confederation of the states with
most power vested with the state governments. |
The Conservative
and Unionist Party, Britain's oldest
political party, evolved as the successor to the
Tory Party in the 1830s. A major tenet of the
party is the continuation of monarchial
parliamentary government in Britain. |
The Department
of State handles U.S. relations with
other governments. Founded as the Department of
Foreign Affairs in 1781, it is the oldest
executive office of the U.S. government. |
