Operation
Crossroads was an
atmospheric nuclear weapon test series conducted
in the summer of 1946, at Bikini Atoll in the
Marshall Islands. The series consisted of two
detonations of 23-kiloton atomic bombs. The tests
were conducted in order to study the effects of
nuclear weapons on ships, equipment, and
material. Technical experiments were also
conducted to study nuclear weapon explosion
phenomena. |
North
Atlantic Treaty Organization
NATO provides unified
military leadership for the common defense of 26
Western nations. It was established in 1950 by
the nations allied by the North Atlantic Treaty,
which provided for their collective defense
against a possible attack by Russia or any other
aggressor. Article 5 of the treaty provides that
an armed attack against one or more member
nations in Europe or North America shall be
considered an attack against all members. |
Buffalo
Soldiers On June 28, 1866, an Act of
Congress authorized the creation of six regiments
of black troops, two of cavalry and four of
infantry. The first two regiments were
subsequently organized on September 21, 1866, and
these are the two regiments that would become
known to history as the "Buffalo
Soldiers." |
Richard
Jordan Gatling thought the invention
of an automatic gun that could deliver a high
rate of fire would reduce the number of soldiers
required to man the battlefield, thus helping to
reduce the number of battlefield casualties. In
1862 he patented the Gatling Gun. |
The North
American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD)
is the military agency charged with guarding
North America against attacks by aircraft,
missiles and/or space vehicles. And, since 1955,
it has been the official tracker of Santa Claus
on Christmas Eve. |
