Aphra Behn
was one of the first women to make writing her
sole source of income. She is best known for the
historical novel Oroonoko, the
History of the Royal Slave, which has been
cited as one of the earliest examples of the
noble savage in literature. |
Henry Fielding
published the satiric poem The Masquerade
and had his first play, Love in Several
Masques, performed in 1728. His most famous
novel, The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling,
was published in 1749. He was also an excellent
journalist and essayist. |
