Robert Heron Bork
was serving as Solicitor General of the United
States when he was called upon to fire Watergate
Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox. His nomination
to the Supreme Court was hotly contested, and
ultimately defeated because of his openly
conservative opinions. |
Clarence Seward Darrow
was a well respected labor lawyer before turning
his attention to criminal law. As a defense
attorney he successfully argued against
imposition of the death penalty against Nathan
Leopold and Richard Loeb. In 1925 he defended
high school teacher John T. Scopes, who had been
charged with violating Tennessee State law by
teaching evolution. |
Lutie Lytle
became the third African-American woman to be
licensed to practice law in the United States in
1897. That same year she became the only black
female to be practicing law in the United States,
after the first two died. |
