Important Dates in Switzerland August 1, 1291 The states of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden signed the Perpetual Covenant, establishing the Swiss Confederation. 1499 Switzerland won independence from the Holy Roman Empire.
William TellWilliam Tell was the hero of the Swiss movement for independence from the Austrian Habsburgs in the 13th century. He is best known for shooting an apple off his son's head with a crossbow arrow, and is the National Hero of Switzerland (despite there being no historical evidence of his existence).
