The Colosseum
(aka Coliseum) was begun in 72
A.D. by Emperor Vespasian, completed by his son
Titus in 80 A.D., and expanded during the reign
of Domitian (81-96). Officially known as the
Flavian Amphitheatre under the Roman Empire, it
is believed to have gotten its more common name
from a huge statue of Nero that once stood
nearby. |
Hadrian
succeeded Trajan as Emperor in 117. During his
reign, a single, uniform legal code was adopted
throughout the Empire, an empire-wide
communications system was created, and defensive
fortifications were erected (including Hadrian's
Wall in England). |
Giulio
Andreotti served in more than 30
individual ministerial or prime ministerial
positions, including three times as Prime
Minister. Immensely popular, he most likely holds
the record for most votes ever received by a
single Italian politician over the course of his
career. |
Elba
is an island off the west coast of Italy. Famous
for its iron and copper mines in early times, it
is now better known as being the place to which
