Konrad Adenauer
served as the first Chancellor of West Germany
from 1949 to 1963. During his tenure West Germany
joined NATO and the European Common Market, he
personally acknowledged Germany's responsibility
for the crimes committed against the Jews during
World War II. |
Ludwig
Erhard helped established a new
Germany currency after World War II, a move which
became the foundation of Germany's economic
rebirth. He subsequently served West Germany as a
member of the Bundestag, as Minister of
Economics, and as Chancellor. |
Saarland
is a state in southwest Germany,
bounded on the north and east by the state of
Rhineland-Palatinate, on the south by France, and
on the west by France and Luxembourg. The capital
and largest city is Saarbrücken. |
Berlin Wall
German and Soviet troops began
erecting the Berlin Wall during the night of
August 13, 1961, and by August 26 all crossing
points between West and East Berlin had been
closed. |
