Charles
Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord was
a supporter of and adviser to Napoleon Bonaparte,
but did not support his efforts to conquer
Europe. Following Napoleon's defeat, he made sure
that France would not be punished too harshly for
Napoleon's actions. |
Louis Philippe
was elected "King of the French, by the
grace of God and the will of the people" by
the Chamber of Deputies in 1830. He was, however,
not universally popular with the people. In 1848
he abdicated in favor of his grandson. |
Joseph Jacques Césaire
Joffre rose up through the military
ranks to become a Major General in 1905. As
commander of French forces during the early years
of World War I, he gained hero status for his
actions at the First Battle of the Marne. |
