Sir Francis Drake
commanded the first English expedition to sail
around the world, between December 13, 1577 and
September 26, 1580. He did so, however, more by
circumstance than by design, due to his raiding
of Spanish settlements during the first leg of
the voyage. |
Sir Walter Raleigh
funded the first English exploration of the
coastal region from North Carolina to Florida and
dubbed the region "Virginia" in honor
of Queen Elizabeth. He was also responsible for
founding the colony on Roanoke Island that
mysteriously disappeared. |
John Burgoyne
served with distinction during the Seven Years'
War, and subsequently won a commission to invade
New York during the American Revolutionary War.
He was forced to surrender his army to
Continental forces on October 17, 1777. |
William Howe
gained distinction during the campaign against
Quebec in 1759, during the Seven Years' War. Sent
back to America in 1775, he actively
led a column against Americans entrenched on
Breed's Hill. As commander of all British forces
in America he won battles at Long Island, White
Plains and Brandywine before resigning. |
Horatio
Nelson was one of England's greatest
admirals. He defeated the French fleet at the
Battle of the Nile in 1798, and again at the
Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, a victory that
ultimately led to the War of 1812. |
Robert
Ross was the British General who led
his army into Washington, D.C., during the War of
1812 and completely routed American troops trying
to defend the city, and then proceeded to burn
most of the key buildings, including the
President's House and the Capitol. |
Arthur
Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington
commanded British forces in the Peninsular War,
helped defeat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo,
and served as Prime Minister of Great Britain
from 1828 to 1830. |
