Alexandru Ioan CuzaAlexandru Ioan Cuza became the first Prince of a unified Romania in 1859. As ruler he worked to improve the lives of the peasant class and provided Romania with a Criminal and Civil Code. Many of his reforms ultimately failed, however, and he was forced to abdicate in 1866.
