Alexander Dubcek
served as First Secretary of the Czechoslovak
Communist Party from 1968 to 1969. During his
tenure he attempted to introduce reforms into the
Party and allow "Socialism with a human
face." His attempts were stopped by the
Soviet Union, however, and he was forced into
exile. |
Václav
Havel was a playwright who became an
activist following the Warsaw Pact invasion of
Czechoslovakia in 1968. In 1989 he was elected
the first President of the Czechsolovak Socialist
Republic. In 1993 he became the first President
of the Czech Republic. |
