Important Dates in the Philippines "Discovered" by Magellan in 1521. Ceded to the United States in 1898. Commonwealth of the Philippines established in 1935. Independence achieved in 1946.
Ferdinand Edralin MarcosFerdinand Edralin Marcos became President in 1965, and served until popular disrest forced him to accept Corazon Aquino as his replacement in 1986.
Corazon Cojuangco AquinoCorazon Cojuangco Aquino was propelled into politics by the murder of her husband in 1983. She replaced Ferdinand Marcos as President in 1986, and served until 1992. During her administration, the Philippines adopted a new Constitution.
