| Chronology of Lebanese
History 64 B.C. The Romans, under Pompey the Great, conquered Phoenicia. 630's Lebanon was conquered by Arabs and integrated into the Arab military district of Damascus. 759-760 Christian peasants revolted, but the rebellion faltered. 1099 Crusaders occupied the country; they remained until the 13th century. 1516 The Ottoman Turks conquered Lebanon. 1711 The Maronites became the dominant power. 1770 A Maronite Shihab became the Emir. 1842 The Druses ended Shihab rule. 1858-1860 Civil war between Druse and Maronite, Muslim and Christian, and landlord and peasant. 1861 The Ottomans and the European powers established a new administration for Lebanon. 1920 The French created the state of Greater Lebanon. 1926 The French established the Lebanese Republic. 1943 France granted complete independence to Lebanon. 1958 Muslim Arab nationalists rebelled against the government. The United States, at the request of the government, sent about 10,000 Marines to help restore order. 1975-1976 Civil war between Christians and Muslims. 1978 Israel invaded southern Lebanon. 1982-1983 An international peacekeeping force was stationed in Beirut. |
