Noor Mohammad Taraki became President with the help of the Soviet Union in 1978, only to be ousted by Hafizullah Amin a year later.

Hafizullah Amin ousted Noor Mohammad Taraki to become President in 1979, only to be ousted by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan later that same year.

Babrak Karmal became President upon the ouster of Hafizullah Amin, but was unable to overcome popular revolts against Soviet occupation and was forced to resign in 1986.
