Gamal Abdel NasserGamal Abdel Nasser was part of the military coup that overthrew King Faruk in 1952. In 1954 he negotiated and signed the treaty which made Egypt completely independent of Great Britain. As President from 1956 to 1970, he nationalized the Suez Canal, helped form the United Arab Republic, and took responsibility for Egypt's loss to Israel in the Six-Day War.
United Arab RepublicThe United Arab Republic was a union of Egypt and Syria that was proclaimed on February 1, 1958. The UAR had a centralized government, with Cairo as the capital and Gamal Abdel Nasser as President. The union was dissolved in December 1961.
Anwar al-SadatAnwar al-Sadat was part of the military coup that overthrew King Faruk in 1952. He became President upon the death of Nasser in 1970, and while serving in that capacity helped bring peace between Egypt and Israel for the first time in history. He was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978, with Israeli Premier Menachem Begin.
