Joe Louis
held the World Heavyweight Championship longer
than any other boxer. He earned it by knocking
out James Braddock on June 22, 1937, and held it
through 24 challenges until retiring as
undefeated champion in 1949. |
Martha Graham
founded the Martha Graham Dance Company in 1926.
Her company helped groom a number of other
well-known dancers and choreographers, including
Alvin Ailey and Twyla Tharp. As a choreographer,
she was responsible for 118 ballets, many of
which were set to contemporary music and
portrayed great women of history and mythology. |
Phineas Taylor
Barnum began his show business
career in 1835, when he put Joice Heth on exhibit
and advertised her to be over 160 years old and
George Washington's nurse. His Barnum's American
Museum in New York was for several years one of
the most popular destinations in the United
States. The "Greatest Show on Earth"
began touring under that moniker in 1872. |
