Mikhail Baryshnikov left the American Ballet Theatre for the New York City Ballet in May. His debut with the NYCB took place on July 9 in Saratoga Springs, New York, as Frantz in the Alexandra Danilova-George Balanchine staging of Coppélia.
For the first time since its founding by Alicia Alonso in 1948, the Ballet Nacional de Cuba visited the United States, beginning with a May 30th performance in Washington, D.C. That performance featured Alonso dancing the title part in Giselle.
The Covent Garden Royal Ballet added Mayerling (Liszt, arranged and orchestrated by John Lanchbery) to its repertory during the 1977-78 season. This three-act work was designed by Nicholas Georgiadis and choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan.
