John Barton Gruelle
was the creator of Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy.
According to the most commonly told story,
Raggedy Ann began as a gift from Gruelle to his
sick daughter. After her passing, he turned the
stories he had told his daughter about Raggedy
Ann's various adventures into drawn and written
form. The first volume of Raggedy Ann Stories
was published in 1918; Raggedy Andy premiered in
1920; and the comic strip "Adventures of
Raggedy Ann and Andy" began appearing in
1922. |
