James Hoban
entered a competition to design a
presidential residence. His design, inspired by
Kildare House (now Leinster House), then the
headquarters of the Royal Dublin Society and now
of the Irish Parliament, was chosen, and he was
awarded a prize of $500. The residence he
designed is now known as the White House. |
Eliel Saarinen
became internationally famous for his design of
the Helsinki (Finland) railroad station. After
emigrating to the United States in 1923, he
designed buildings for the Cranbrook Educational
Center in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. |
Peter
Behrens worked as a painter and
graphic artist before turning to architecture. As
artistic consultant for a major German
manufacturing company, he not only designed the
company's logo and sales literature, but its
factories and workers' apartments as well. He
also designed a number of household electrical
appliances, china, glass objects, and patterned
linoleum flooring. |
