Fulgencio
Batista Zaldívar was
elected President of Cuba in 1940, and
defeated for re-election in 1944. He
staged a coup to regain the presidency in
1952, and served until going into exile
in 1958. During his tenure he fought
revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro, who
were motivated by Batista's quest for
personal wealth at the expense of the
Cuban people. |
