of John C. Frémont's expeditions,
participated in California's Bear-Flag Rebellion,
forced the Apache onto a reservation, and waged
an economic war against the Navajo. |
William
Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody
was the youngest person ever to ride for the Pony
Express, the subject of a Ned Buntline dime
novel, and operator of a traveling wild west show
that featured full-scale Indian battles and
sharpshooting demonstrations. |
John
Henry "Doc" Holliday was
diagnosed with tuberculosis soon after starting a
dental practice. Unable to keep patients, he
became a very successful card
player who was also quick to take offense and
prone to violence. On October 26, 1881, he and
several others had their famous shootout
at the O.K. Corral. |
Meriwether Lewis,
with William Clark, explored the Louisiana
Territory and in the process discovered the mouth
of the Columbia River. |
Nat
Love was a former slave who gained a
reputation as one of the best cowboys ever, as
well as an excellent sharpshooter. |
Zebulon Montgomery Pike
led two expeditions into the West, one to find
the source of the Mississippi River and one to
find the source of the Missouri River. Although
both expeditions failed to achieve their ultimate
goals, the second one did result in the discovery
of Pike's Peak. |
