The Gadsden
Purchase came about primarily
because of a desire to connect all Southern
railroads into one system and then connect that
system with a Southern transcontinental railroad
to the Pacific. On June 30, 1854, the United
States agreed to purchase 45,535 square miles of
territory in what is now southwestern New Mexico
and southern Arizona for the sum of $10,000,000. |

Santa Fe. |

Salt Lake is the largest lake in the
Western United States. It is very different from
almost every other lake in the world because it
is very shallow and extremely salty. In fact, it
is actually saltier than the oceans. |
