Gadsden PurchaseThe Gadsden Purchase came about primarily because of a desire to connect all Southern railroads into one system and then connect that system with a Southern transcontinental railroad to the Pacific. On June 30, 1854, the United States agreed to purchase 45,535 square miles of territory in what is now southwestern New Mexico and southern Arizona for the sum of $10,000,000.
