Important Dates in Kentucky
1750 Thomas Walker made the first thorough exploration of the Kentucky region.
1767 Daniel Boone explored eastern Kentucky.
1774 A group of colonists from Pennsylvania, led by James Harrod, established the first permanent white settlement in Kentucky, at Harrodsburg.
1775 Daniel Boone led a group of settlers through the Cumberland Gap.
1776 Kentucky became a county of Virginia.
1778 George Rogers Clark led a small band of men against three important British posts outside the region.
1792 Kentucky became the 15th state, on June 1.
1798 Kentucky adopted strong resolutions declaring the Alien and Sedition Acts unconstitutional.
1897 Kentuckians revolted against the private ownership of roads and the use of toll roads in many parts of the state.
1936 The U.S. Treasury established a gold vault at Fort Knox.
