Sault
Ste. Marie has been a
natural stopping place for travelers for
centuries because of the St. Mary's Rapids, which
form a natural barrier to navigation between Lake
Superior and the rest of the Great Lakes. Today,
it is best known for the Soo Locks, which allow
ships and boats to bypass those rapids. |
Antoine
de la Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac
founded Fort Pontchartrain on the site of what is
now Detroit in 1701. His monopoly on trade in the
area, combined with abuses in his transactions
with the Indians, led to his being recalled to
France in 1710. |
The
Battle
of Fallen Timbers, fought on August
20, 1794, is considered to have been one of the
most significant battles ever fought on American
soil. Had the U.S. lost the battle much of what
we now know as Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan could
very well be part of Canada instead of the United
States. |
John
Porter Altgeld was elected Governor
of Illinois in 1892. His single term in office is
most noted by the Pullman Strike, during which
federal troops were sent into Illinois without
his consent. His actions during the strike made
him unpopular with both pro- and anti-labor
factions. |
