John Porter
Altgeld was elected Governor of
Illinois in 1892. His single term in office is
most noted by the Pullman Strike, during which
federal troops were sent into Illinois without
his consent. His actions during the strike made
him unpopular with both pro- and anti-labor
factions. |
Fort
Dearborn was built at
the mouth of the Chicago River in 1803 to control
the territory between Lake Michigan and the
Mississippi River. |
