Amsterdam was established by the
Dutch West India Company at the southern tip of
Manhattan Island in 1624. Originally founded to
protect Dutch fur trade operations in the Hudson
River Valley, it became New York City in 1664. |
Niagara Falls are a group of waterfalls noted for the
great volume of water which drops over a steep
escarpment 167 feet high in the Niagara River.
They are the second largest falls in the world,
behind Victoria Falls in southern Africa. About
20 percent of the world's total freshwater supply
falls over Niagara every day. |

the Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island
(formerly Bedloe's Island) in New York Harbor.
France gave the monument to the United States in
1884 as a symbol of friendship. |
