William Thomas Sampson
became interested in ordnance technology while at
the U.S. Naval Academy. During his tenure in the
Navy he made numerous improvements to the
technology used by the Navy, and to its training
practices. As Commander of the North Atlantic
Squadron during the Spanish-American War, he was
partially responsible for the American Navy's
decimation of a Spanish fleet at Santiago, Cuba,
on July 3, 1898. |
