The Grave of Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt died of a coronary embolism at Sagamore Hill on January 6, 1919, at the age of 60. He was buried at Youngs Memorial Cemetery on January 8, after a simple service at Christ Church in Oyster Bay, New York.

Theodore Roosevelt first visited the Oyster Bay area when he was 16. Many visits followed, and when he was 22 he bought the land on which he built Sagamore Hill, his home.

In 1658, the Youngs Family created a family burial ground on a steep, grassy incline about a mile from the future site of Sagamore Hill. The family eventually opened the burial ground to neighbors, and it was there that Theodore and Edith Roosevelt found their ideal final resting places. Edith "joined" her husband there in 1948.

In remembrance of Roosevelt's great appreciation for wildlife, especially birds, W. Emlen Roosevelt, a cousin, purchased an area adjacent to the cemetery and donated it to the National Audubon Society for use as a bird sanctuary, in 1923.
