An Overview of Grover Cleveland's First
AdministrationGrover Cleveland
was the first Democratic President elected after the
Civil War. His victory was a protest against the waste
and corruption that had disgraced Republican
administrations after the war. His honesty and common
sense helped restore confidence in the government.
Cleveland occupied the White House
during a time of swift social and economic change. The
growing strength of labor unions and farm organizations
created new problems for government. But Cleveland lacked
the experience and vision to find completely satisfactory
answers to all the problems. Although his intentions were
always good, his methods often fell short of success.
