During Jefferson's two terms as President, the United States doubled in area with the purchase of the vast Louisiana Territory, America preserved its hard-won neutrality while Napoleon's armies battled most of Europe, and Congress passed a law banning the slave trade.

1803 Chief Justice John Marshall established the Supreme Court's power of judicial review in the Marbury v Madison decision.
1804 The 12th Amendment, providing for the separate elections of President and Vice-President, was proclaimed.
Jul 11, 1804 Vice-President Aaron Burr shot and killed former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton in a duel.
1805 Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific Coast.
1806 Zebulon M. Pike explored the Rocky Mountains and sighted the Colorado peak that bears his name.
Mar 2, 1807 Congress prohibited the importation of African slaves into the United States.
Dec 12, 1807 Congress passed the Embargo Act, forbidding U.S. ships to carry goods to other nations.
1807 Robert Fulton demonstrated the first commercially successful steamboat, the Clermont, on the Hudson River.
1807 Aaron Burr was tried for treason and acquitted.
Mar 1, 1809 The Non-Intercourse Act was passed, nullifying the Embargo Act.
