The
French and
Indian War was the last and most
important conflict over French and British
possessions in North America. Unlike the three
previous wars, which began in Europe and then
spread to America, this struggle broke out first
in America. Its European counterpart, the Seven
Years' War, began two years later, in 1756. |
The
Battle of the
Monongahela was fought near
present-day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on July 9,
1755, when a British/American force led by Major
General Edward Braddock was ambushed by a
French/Indian force. Braddock was killed during
the battle, but his aide-de-camp George
Washington earned great distinction. |
