The Panama Canal
is a 50.72-mile-long man-made
channel across the Isthmus of Panama that
connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Approximately 12-15,000 ships pass through the
canal every year (an average of about 40 ships a
day). |
Manuel Noriega participated in the 1968 coup led by
Omar Torrijos that overthrew the government of
President Arnulfo Arias. He became the military
leader of Panama in 1983, but was ousted from
power by the United States military in 1989. |
