Hudson's Bay CompanyThe Hudson's Bay Company was founded in London in 1670 for the purpose of establishing a fur trade in what is now the Hudson Bay region. Today, the company ranks as one of Canada's largest corporations. It is also the oldest continuously operating company in America.
Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de La VerendryePierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de La Vérendrye set out on an expedition to find a great western sea in 1731. Although his 12-year quest failed to find such a sea, it did succeed in exploring and mapping a vast stretch of what is now western Canada, and to discover the Missouri River.
