The Dachshund
originated in 15th-century Germany, where it was
bred specifically to hunt and kill badgers in
their burrows. Because of its origins, it is
amazingly fearless for its size. |
Dalmatian
This easily recognizable breed is
commonly associated with firemen because it has a
natural ability to bond with horses. Owners of
horse-drawn carriages began keeping dalmatians as
guard dogs because of this natural bond, and this
led to their association with firemen. |
Greyhound
Bred for sight hunting, the
greyhound has a deep chest for great heart and
lung capacity, slender legs for speed and
agility, well-developed muscles for endurance,
and slender head with wide nostrils for more
effective breathing while running. These specific
traits make the greyhound the fastest breed of
dog. |
The Saluki
is one of the oldest dog breeds known to man,
appearing in Egyptian tomb paintings dating from
2100 BC. It probably originated with the
Bedouins, who used the breed to hunt gazelle and
other animals. |
